The retirement is effective immediately.

Cohen, who was competing with Xavier Gipson in camp for a return job, was trying to come back from various injuries throughout his pro career.

He was also in the battle for the fourth quarterback spot, so the withdrawal is good news for Israel Abanikanda, who was fighting for his job.

Cohen, 29, was a fourth-round pick of the Bears in 2017 and played for Chicago until he tore his ACL in Week 3 of the 2020 season and spent the next year on the PUP list.

The Bears released Cohen and then tore his Achilles while working out in May 2022. He signed with the Carolina Panthers practice squad last year but was cut this spring. He then signed a one-year deal with the Jets.

In his 2018 All-Pro season with Chicago, Cohen had 444 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 99 carries and added 71 receptions for 725 yards. He was also one of the NFL’s top punt returners with a league-leading 411 punt return yards.
