Brickner: A ‘Second American Revolution’ opposes patriotism – InForum

My stepson Brian is a good person. He’s hard at work at his award-winning food truck in Detroit. He encourages his choreographer wife and enjoys his 10-year-old son, who is active in sports and music. I am honored that they refer to me as “Mom No. 2″.

However, in talking with him, my husband found that Brian was like many Americans; he sees no point in discussing politics; that politics doesn’t matter.

But I do.

As the late journalist Martha Gellhorn said, “People often proudly say, ‘I’m not interested in politics.’ They might as well say, “I’m not interested in my standard of living, my health, my job, my rights, my freedoms, my future, or any future at all.” … If we want to retain any control over the world and our lives, we must be interested in politics.”

With the proposed 2025 project, the stakes in our 2024 elections could not be higher.

According to The Hill, “Project 2025 is, in the words of Heritage (Foundation) President (Kevin Roberts), a plan to ‘institutionalize Trumpism.’ Trump returned the compliment, saying of Roberts that she’s “doing an incredible job, bringing her back to levels we’ve never seen … thank you, Kevin.”

This mutual admiration does not seem to match Trump’s denials about the document and its authors.

Additionally, much of the more than 900-page document was written or promoted by former staffers such as Stephen Miller, Ben Carson and Steve Bannon. The plan overlaps with his own “Agenda 47,” a plan for his presidency.

This plan covers almost every area of life. Here are some items from the document:

  • National ban on all abortions
  • Ban most types of birth control
  • Banning gay marriage
  • Ending Head Start
  • Christianity taught in public schools
  • Banning African-American and gender studies in schools
  • Prohibit the teaching of slavery
  • Tax cuts for the top 1%
  • Increased taxes for the working class
  • It kills unions and worker protections
  • Cut Social Security and Medicare benefits
  • End the Affordable Care Act
  • Raise prescription drug prices
  • Eliminate the Departments of Education and the Food and Drug Administration
  • Restrict or eliminate the FBI and Homeland Security
  • Stop civil rights and DEI policies in the federal government
  • Replace most federal employees with Trump loyalists
  • Mass deportation of immigrants
  • Ban on Muslim immigration
  • Complete birthright citizenship

I keep hearing more items like requiring all public school children to undergo military training, selling all public land, even for mining. Then, the prohibition of pornography – a hard-to-define term that affects books, films and art.

Some people think that people like me are Trump haters, even though I find him extremely immoral. No, I’m just a democracy lover. We do not need an American Alexei Navalny, imprisoned and killed in prison for his speech, including the investigation of political corruption.

I’m sorry Brian. Politics matters. It matters for the food you prepare, your health care, your son’s school, your income, your taxes, and national parks. It matters to your and your parents’ income and health. It matters that religion is protected, not a distorted Christian nationalism.

Thanks to the Supreme Court, your president could target you or your family. Use force. As Roberts said, “We are in the process of the second American revolution, which will be bloodless if the left allows it.”

Basically, you comply or you die. Creepy.
