Bypoll Results Live Updates: INDIA bloc wins 10 out of 13 seats, BJP gets 2; Kharge signals PM Modi’s “diminishing” credibility

Bypoll Results Live Updates: The Election Commission has declared the results for all 13 assembly seats that went to polls on July 10. The INDIA Bloc of the Opposition emerged as a major winner. INDIA Bloc won 10 seats while BJP won only 2. One seat was won by an independent candidate.

Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress won all the four West Bengal seats that went to polls. The Congress bagged four seats – two each in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Aam Aadmi Party won the only seat in Punjab. An independent candidate won the Bihar Rupauli seat.

BJP got one seat each in Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The Rupauli seat in Bihar went to an independent candidate.

TMC sweeps West Bengal

In West Bengal’s Raiganj seat, TMC leader Krishna Kalyani defeated BJP leader Manas Kumar Ghosh by over 50,000 votes. TMC’s Madhupurna Thakur defeated BJP’s Binay Biswas by about 33,000 votes in West Bengal’s Bagda seat. TMC leader Mukut Adhikari won the Ranaghat Dakshin seat by around 39,000 votes.

TMC candidate Supti Pandey defeated BJP’s Kayan Chaubey by a margin of around 62,000 votes from Maniktala Assembly constituency.

Congress wins 2 seats in Himachal Pradesh, BJP bag 1

The Congress won two of the three seats that went to polls in Himachal Pradesh. Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has won the Dehri bypolls. Congress candidate Hardeep Singh Bawa also won from Himachal Pradesh’s Nalagarh seat, defeating BJP’s KL Thakur by about 8,900 votes.

BJP candidate Ashish Sharma defeated Congress leader Pushpinder Verma by around 1500 votes in Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur seat.

In Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Mohinder Bhagat won the Jalandhar West bypoll, defeating Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sheetal Angural by more than 37,000 votes, according to the Election Commission of India.

NDA vs INDIA

The by-polls are seen as a significant test for the opposition bloc INDIA as it faces the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the first electoral battle after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The general election, the results of which were announced on June 4, saw the BJP fall short of a majority and the opposition INDIA bloc gaining power. The BJP eventually got 240 Lok Sabha seats – 32 short of a majority.

Narendra Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister for a record third time as the BJP-led NDA managed to cross the halfway mark of 272 with a total of 293 seats. The Congress-led INDIA bloc got 232 seats.

Congress wins both seats in Uttarakhand

Congress won both assembly seats in Uttarakhand polls. Qazi Mohammad Nizammudin won the Mangraul bypoll by a slim margin of around 400 votes. In Badrinath too, Congress candidate Lakhapat Singh Butola defeated former MLA Rajendra Bhandari by a margin of over 5000 votes.

The DMK was leading in the only seat in Tamil Nadu, Vikravandi, that went to polls. In Bihar’s Rupauli seat, independent candidate Shankar Singh won the polls defeating JD-U’s KP Mandal.

Why through surveys?

The polls in these 13 assembly seats across seven states, held on July 10, were necessitated by the vacancies created due to the deaths or resignations of sitting MLAs from various parties.

Of the 13 seats that went to the polls, the BJP, Congress and TMC held two each, while one seat each was held by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Janata Dal (Unity), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ( DMK) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Independents took the other three seats.

Live poll results: Congress signals ‘declining political credibility of Modi and Shah’

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said the poll results were a “strong proof of the decline in political credibility of (Prime Minister) Modi and (Amit) Shah”. Hailing the results in which the INDIA block won 110 out of 13 seats, Kharge said, “This victory shows that people have now completely rejected the arrogance, misgovernance and negative politics of the BJP.”
