The Chicago Cubs could lean toward that strategy at the trade deadline

The Chicago Cubs were one of the most watched and talked about teams in baseball heading into the MLB trade deadline. No one knows what they will do.

In their last eight games, the Cubs have won seven. They are starting to play like a team that could be back in playoff contention if they can keep up the pace for a few more weeks.

That kind of success would also make Jed Hoyer extremely interested in buying talent and putting effort into winning this season.

On Wednesday afternoon, MLB insider Jon Heyman appeared live The Bleacher Report video talking about the trade deadline and what Chicago’s plans might be.

Heyman said he believes the Cubs plan to buy talent, not sell it.

Chicago is currently just three games back in the Wild Card race. They are very alive. Adding a few parts might be enough to get them back in the running.

Looking at the Cubs roster, there is no reason for them to have struggled the way they did. They have good starting pitching talent, better bullpen talent than they’ve shown, and a lineup that should produce at a high level. If all players start playing at, or even close to, their potential, Chicago would be a tough team to beat.

Their recent wins have shown what they are capable of. They can do that all the time if they step up and play the way they can.

Assuming the Cubs end up buying, they’ll likely target a few areas. They need a catcher upgrade in a big way and could use a closer. Chicago could also look to acquire a big bat if one is available in their price range.

Some names to monitor are Elias Diaz and Kyle Finnegan. Both players would be great additions and likely within the Cubs budget. Those two additions alone would make it a much more serious contender.

Expect to hear plenty of Chicago rumors in the coming days. If they keep winning, the Cubs will have a very good chance to try to add talent before the deadline.
