Two charged in death of Wichita Falls man shot while barbecuing

Two men were in the Wichita County Jail on Saturday charged with capital murder, according to court and jail records.

Marqwon Griffin and MH Griffin III are charged in the June 20 shooting death of Brandon Lane Clampit, 50, in the 1500 block of Smith Street.

Both men were being held Saturday in the Wichita jail on $750,000 bail each on one count of capital murder by terroristic threat or other crimes, according to online jail records.

Marqwon Griffin was also being held on $100,000 bail on a charge of aggravated robbery. Police say he stole a cell phone from a woman at gunpoint on June 15, days before Clampit was shot.

Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent until convicted by a court of law.

According to allegations in arrest warrants filed in the case, Wichita Falls police were able to use surveillance video from the crime scene and Clampit’s cell phone, which contained messages about an illegal drug deal.

The affidavit said the video showed the clothes the suspects were wearing as they approached the scene and even captured muzzle flash from the shooting.

Police chased Marqwon Griffin to a store on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on Thursday. After a short chase, they arrested him.

Police also obtained a warrant to search Marqwon Griffin’s residence on Gerald Street.

According to a news release from the Wichita Falls Police Department, the SWAT team converged on the residence late Friday afternoon and detained several people for questioning.

One of them was MH Griffin, who told officers that Clampit was shot during a marijuana deal, according to police charges. He said Marqwon Griffin discussed the deal with Clampit via cellphone, and he and Marqwon approached the man while he was barbecuing outside his residence.

MH Griffin said that when the transaction was completed, Marqwon pulled out a gun and demanded that Clampit give him everything he had.

He said Marqwon Griffin shot Clampit with a .9 millimeter handgun and the two suspects fled the scene, according to the charges. Marqwon Griffin refused to talk to police and asked for an attorney.
