It’s one thing to call your name in the NBA draft. It’s another to call him the NBA champions.

But that was Baylor Scheierman’s reality Wednesday night when the Boston Celtics used their final first-round pick to select the standout guard from Creighton.

Scheierman didn’t have to wait nervously through the first round in the green room at Barclays Center like other draft prospects. He hosted a viewing party in his home state of Nebraska and KETV’s Lauren Michelson captured the magical moment in which NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced his name as the Celtics’ draft pick.

It was a gentle reaction from Baylor Scheierman, who smiled widely before giving family members a few big hugs.

Scheierman may spend more time in the G League than with the Celtics next season given Boston’s talented and deep roster, but he is undoubtedly a valuable asset to the franchise. The 6-foot-7 guard averaged 18.5 points, nine rebounds and 3.9 assists in his final season with Creighton and is a career 39 percent shooter from beyond the arc.

Scheierman can also claim a piece of trivia. He becomes the Celtics’ first pick from basketball operations that Brad Stevens has made in the first round since moving to the front office in June 2021.
