Firework sales ignite across the Big Country ahead of Independence Day celebrations

With Independence Day quickly approaching, residents are eager to know when and where they can buy fireworks.

The Texas Department of Insurance states anyone with a retail fireworks permit may begin selling fireworks from June 24 until midnight July 4.

Although there are several public fireworks displays happening around the Big Country, many residents will plan to do their own fireworks at home.

Lex Smith, co-owner of Boombah Fireworks, said it’s important to keep safety a priority when lighting fireworks. She said they recommend having one person handle the fireworks to prevent any accidents.

“We want everyone to have a happy, safe Fourth so we ask that you have a designated detonator. Somebody who has not inhibited their judgment by alcohol or anything else,” Smith said.

She also recommends keeping plenty of water nearby to put out any unwanted fires.

“Always have water, a fire extinguisher, anything,” she explained. “And when you’re done using the fireworks, we want you to douse them, like, wet them down because they will reignite.”

An alert from Taylor County states there are no restrictions regarding what fireworks can be sold this year. However, fireworks are not allowed to be set off in Abilene city limits:

Please be aware that it is a Class C Misdemeanor and a $500 fine for the use of fireworks on a Taylor County road and are also banned from use in the City Limits of Abilene.

Other fireworks stands around Abilene include:

Alamo Fireworks Megastore – 5669 E Hwy 80 in Abilene

BoomBah Fireworks – 156 FM 2404 in Abilene

TNT Fireworks – Multiple locations

Bad Boyz Fireworks – 5724 East I-20 (off Elmdale and Frontage Road)

Multiple counties across the Big Country are under a burn ban. It’s important to keep in mind what each county’s rules are regarding fireworks since each county may have different regulations.
