Dumas ISD is finishing the last of three new elementary schools

DUMAS, Texas (KFDA) – The last of three Dumas ISD elementary schools have been put to rest.

“We managed to get a bond to build three new schools. One in Cactus, North opened last year, last August, and that was Green Acres and Hillcrest coming together. We’re in Dumas South Elementary, and that’s Sunset and Morning Side Elementary coming together to make Dumas South,” said Caynon Strickland, principal of Dumas South Elementary.

Dumas ISD, the City of Dumas and the City of Cactus are working together to decide what to do with the old buildings. One of the buildings will include a career technology center.

“We don’t have a plan yet for all the new schools in Cactus, that will be a board decision. There is no rush for this. But one of them in town, Sunset Elementary, will become part of the town and the town offices will be housed there,” said Monty Hysinger, superintendent of Dumas ISD.

This $100 million+ project took over five years, and now Dumas ISD is looking to the future of these new schools.

“I’m so thankful for our community for this opportunity, and then for our students for the help and our coaches and everybody that helped make it possible to get into the school and have the school in the first place. It’s something I think the community will be proud of for years to come,” Hysinger said.

Dumas North Elementary opened last school year, and Cactus Elementary and Dumas South will open this fall, with students allowed to enter on July 1.
