KCK police say the files were leaked on the dark web following a recent cyber attack

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A cyber attack that destroyed police and fire networks in Kansas City, Kansas, is still having major effects.

That’s as FOX4 learns more about the scale of this attack.

A source who reviewed the names of the leaked files in this dump that these cybercriminals released says it appears that most of the files held by the KCK police and fire department have been compromised.

This, a day after KCK police admitted that the data leaked by these cybercriminals was indeed theirs.

FOX4 has learned the leak is more extensive and damaging than originally thought.

“It should be very concerning to anyone — because it’s not something we wanted, it’s not something we asked for, and it puts an undue strain on our resources when we have to deal with these issues,” Mayor KCK said , Tyrone Garner, for FOX4.

“This is a known threat actor, Black Suit has a website or a dark net site that they have and they list their alleged victims and their files,” said Tanner Shinn, principal engineer at Alias Cybersecurity.

The file names contained in this leak sent to FOX4 by a source contain information such as open investigation, training information, bank records, personnel files, compliance reviews and more, all posted and now live on the dark web.

While members of the public who have dealt with either department are advised to contact the respective entities, our cyber expert says there is one group above all that should be most concerned.

“I would imagine the people who should be most concerned are the employees who are directly involved,” Shinn said.

While the fallout will undoubtedly continue in the coming weeks and months, the mayor said Wednesday that the people of this city are safe.

“Your services have not been diminished, police officers still respond when you call them, our fire and EMS personnel respond when you call them,” Garner said.

FOX4 for legal reasons could not independently access these files, but the location is said to be home to people with nefarious intentions. According to our expert, the level of concern should be very high.
