Sinkhole causes road closure in south Fargo

FARGO, ND (Valley News Live) – The city of Fargo is warning people about a large sinkhole on the south side of the city. It’s on 30th Avenue South between University Drive and 15th Street South.

Public Works crews learned of the sinkhole around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1 and responded to the scene to set up barricades. It is said to be about 8 feet wide and 8 feet deep.

The Fargo Police Department says the intersection is currently closed as public works crews work to repair it. Cones, signs and barriers warn drivers to avoid the area.

The City of Fargo is working to determine the extent of any damage to underground infrastructure. They are hoping to have a contractor start repairs on Tuesday or Wednesday. The goal is to have the repairs completed and the road open to traffic by the end of Friday.

Public Works told Valley News Live sinkholes involving the storm sewer system occur occasionally. However, sinkholes like this one involving the sanitary sewer system are rare.

While the cause of the sinkhole has not yet been determined, the city wants to remind residents to properly hook up their pool pumps for the spring and summer to avoid overloading the sanitary sewer system. Between March 31 and October 1, residential sump pumps must discharge into the storm sewer system either through a direct connection to a storm sewer main line, directly on the ground, 20 feet or more from the resident’s home, or through a buried line to the channel. border.
